Father’s Day

Posted in Touring, events, places and traditions on Mar 19, 2019

Today in Italy it is FATHER’S DAY! As in some other catholic countries fathers are celebrated on March the 19th, St. Joseph day. The husband of Mary the Virgin, the mother of Jesus Christ, according to the popular tradition doesn’t protect just the fathers but as well the orphans, the unmarried people and the most unfortunate. For this reason in some areas of Sicily, on March the 19th is a tradition to invite poor people for lunch.

My Father Raviole, Typical Sweet Of Father'S Day

In Bologna, my hometown, Raviole are the typical sweet of Father’s Day. Raviole are not to be confused with Ravioli, a traditional fresh pasta, as well half-moon shaped. Raviole are made a of a crumbly pastry filled with “mostarda bolognese”. Nothing to do with mustard, though. “Mostarda bolognese” is a jam used just to stuff traditional sweets and it’s made of plums, pears, quince apples mixed together with sultanas and chopped walnuts. In the old times Raviole where prepared at the end of the winter season in the countryside to welcome the spring!
